Figurative Inlay Jewelry
These pieces explore the figure through inlay, with stones chosen to shape the mood of each form—much like a painter builds a palette. As each piece develops, the shape and materials come together, resulting in a more expressive side of my work.
This piece was made as part of a Heidi Lowe Gallery exhibition “Amoré,” where each of the 10 jewelry artists were given a love letter to interpret and make one piece of jewelry from.
This is the love letter I was given:
“I love you, my poor little angel, you know it, and yet you want me to write it to you. You are right. You have to love each other, and then you have to say it, and then you have to write it, and then you have to kiss each other on the lips, in the eyes, everywhere. You are my beloved Juliette. When I am sad I think of you, as in winter one thinks of the sun, and when I am happy I think of you, as in full sun one thinks of the shade. You can well see, Juliette, that I love you with all my soul.
You have the youthful air of a child, and the wise air of a mother, and so I envelop you with all these loves at once.”
— Victor Hugo

Cut from lapis lazuli, this mermaid is built directly into the stone through hand-cut inlay, where the figure emerges through material rather than being placed on top of it.
As a child, I was transfixed by the mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park—women in bright tails, suspended underwater, moving with a kind of effortless control. That early sense of wonder stayed with me, but over time it shifted into something else.
What draws me now is the balance they hold—both the mystical feminine and a quiet strength, existing within a force as powerful and unpredictable as water.
This piece was made as a small talisman for that feeling: freedom, confidence, and the ability to move within something larger than yourself.

To me, feminine power is like water: soft and gentle, yet shapes stones.
Like the quiet introspection reflected in a trickling stream, there is strength in a kind of meditative magnitude that doesn’t initially appear powerful.
This portrait-style mosaic inlay is made with calming blues to align with her state of mind.

What makes this piece really stand out is the gold sheen obsidian, which dances and shimmers when the light hits it; pictures truly don’t do it justice.
