Mexican Opal Ring Repair
While on vacation in Mexico, my client purchased a Mexican jelly opal ring set on a heavy men’s signet ring.
When he got home, he felt like something was “off” about it. He reached out to me and we both came to the conclusion that the opal’s setting didn’t go with the ring.
While the ring’s design features a lot of geometric designs, the original setting was very organic and rough looking—which isn’t a problem, but it just didn’t fit the ring.
The reason the jeweler created a more uneven setting for the opal is because the opal was kin of jelly bean-shaped, so it didn’t have an even border.
I proposed to my client that I would re-cut the opal and create a new setting for it so it would look cleaner and match the ring much better.
(Pictured is the underside of the Mexican opal, where you can see it is a bit concave in shape which led the jeweler to do a non-traditional setting for it).
After re-cutting the opal, I was able to make a new, even setting for the ring. But even though I only removed very minimal opal during the reshaping, there was still some extra room on the top of the signet ring that needed something to finish it off.
I suggested to my client that we add a loose encircling of silver wire around the stone’s setting to draw your eye to the stone while taking up some space on the top of the ring.
This is the final after recutting the Mexican opal and re-setting the stone for this ring repair.
My client was thrilled to be able to wear this ring proudly again since it didn’t suit his style before.
