Repairing Cracked Turquoise in a Ring
With cracked stones in jewelry, it’s often less expensive to recut a brand new stone. But what if that stone has a lot of sentimental value and you can’t just get rid of it?
Depending on how the cracked stone breaks, it may be a good candidate to be put back together and stabilized with epoxy. That is what this client wanted me to do with his ring.
The broken turquoise removed from the ring before putting it back together.
When I removed the turquoise from the setting, it broke into pieces that could easily be put back together but I always remind my client’s that it won’t ever look exactly as it was before—doing this kind of stone repair will appear to have a hairline fracture even though it is fully secure.
Before I put these pieces back together, I also soaked the other seams with a thinned epoxy before filling them to keep them from separating in the future.
Once the epoxy cured, the stone was re-cut and set back into the ring, giving the broken turquoise a new life.
